OSHKOSH — Mercy A. was named the 2023-24 Youth of the Year representative for the Boys & Girls Club of Oshkosh. The announcement was made at the annual dinner Oct. 26.

This year, seven high school students were interviewed for the honor. The Youth of the Year Committee judges them on their involvement with the club’s community engagement and service efforts, leadership, personal growth and academic success.

As the Oshkosh Club’s Youth of the Year, Mercy receives $10,000 from the Charles. F. Hyde Jr. Scholarship Endowment toward higher education. In March, Youth of the Year winners from Boys & Girls Clubs across the state will compete for the state title and additional scholarships.

Mercy has been a member for the last six years. She serves as president of the Club’s Keystone Leadership Club, volunteers and works as a part-time staff member. She also is top of her senior class at Oshkosh North High School with a 4.0 GPA and a member of the National Honor Society. Mercy has been selected to serve on the 2024 National Keystone Conference Steering Committee. Mercy aspires to be a geneticist.

“My experiences at my Boys & Girls Club are what shaped me to become who I am today,” said Mercy. “The memories I have from my club are embedded in my heart, and I look forward to seeing how my club can help more people. As a leader in my club and now the Youth of the Year, I’m happy to be a small part of helping others just like my club helped me and my family. I want to help bring people together no matter what race, gender, ethnicity or culture they have or belong to.”

Adopt a Family this holiday season through Boys & Girls Club

The Boys & Girls Club is in need of donors for its Adopt a Family program. For some families, extra money for gifts is not always possible.

Through the program, families can create wish lists for the children in their house of anything from basic needs, to clothing and toys. The club matches families with donors who are able to help. Gifts are dropped off at the club and the club then delivers the gifts.

Hygiene baskets also are needed and can include basics such as toilet paper, laundry detergent, hand soap, etc.

With the club being under construction on the administration side of the building, drop-offs (including hygiene baskets) must take place on one of the following dates and be dropped off only at the Radford Center entrance on the north end of the building: 6 to 8 p.m. Dec. 7 and 7 to 11 a.m. Dec. 8. Gifts will go out Dec. 8. Sign up at bgcosh.org/adopt-a-family.
