Oshkosh event to focus on homelessness with documentary screening, and more news in weekly dose

OSHKOSH - Casa Esther, in partnership with ESTHER-Fox Valley, Trinity Episcopal Church, First Congregational Church and the Day By Day Warming Shelter, will host a free screening of the documentary “The Invisible Class.”

The film will be shown at 6 p.m. July 19 at First Congregational Church, 137 Algoma Blvd.

A talkback about homelessness in Oshkosh will follow the screening. Light refreshments will be served.

The documentary tells the stories of homeless families, veterans, elderly individuals and more across the United States. A trailer can be viewed online at theinvisibleclass.com.

The screening is free, but donations will be accepted. Financial donations will benefit Casa Esther’s rental assistance program. Material donations will benefit the Day by Day Warming Shelter. Items needed include Fantastik Spray Cleaner, shower spray, laundry detergent, paper towels, printer paper, ear buds, USB wall plugs and reusable water bottles.

Red Cross seeks to replenish blood supply

The American Red Cross issued a statement that it has collected about 50,000 fewer blood donations than needed over the last two months. Donors are asked to make an appointment to give blood or platelets now to avoid a shortage.

Individuals who are 17 or older, weigh at least 110 pounds and are in general good health may be eligible to donate blood. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in.

Upcoming drives include the following:

  • July 17: 1 to 6 p.m., Gloria Dei Lutheran Church, 1140 Tullar Road, Neenah;

  • July 19: 1 to 6 p.m., YMCA Downtown, 324 Washington Ave., Oshkosh; and

  • July 28: 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., UW-Oshkosh Reeve Union, 748 Algoma Blvd., Oshkosh.

Oshkosh library hosts animal program, drawing session and more

The Oshkosh Public Library has several programs, for kids and adults, scheduled in the last part of July.

Nature’s Niche–Exotic and Native Animal Rescue will share an interactive program at 10 a.m. July 18. Participants will learn about habitats and animal behaviors from founder Dennis “Dino” Tlachac and his team of “creature teachers.”

Maxwell James, a master of zine-making and cartoon/character drawing, will share his expertise during a Zine-Making program from 2 to 4 p.m. July 18. This adult program will meet under the dome.

The Banned Book Club will meet at 5 p.m. July 18 at Planet Perk to discuss “Whale Talk” by Chris Crutcher. The August selection is “Fun Home” by Alison Bechdel.

On July 22, the Stay and Play event will be an Obstacle Course Medley. The session will run 10 a.m. to noon on the lower level. Families can take part in self-led activities, games and projects.

First English Lutheran offers summer lunch, activities

First English Lutheran Church’s Summer Lunch Bunch kicks off its seventh year of providing food and activities for youth in the neighborhood. A new format is in place for 2023.

Meal supplies, including fresh fruit/vegetables, milk/cheese and snack options, will be available inside the main entrance of FELC, 1013 Minnesota St. Hours to pick up are 9 a.m. to noon or 5 to 6 p.m. July 19, 26, Aug. 2, 9, 16, 23 and 30. There will be non-electronic activity options available.

Longtime Oshkosh physician, Dr. Reinardy joins clinic in De Pere

Dr. Thomas Reinardy, OB/Gyn, has joined the St. Gianna Clinic in De Pere. He previously was with Ascension Medical Group in Oshkosh, where he practiced since 1997.

Dr. Reinardy earned his bachelor’s degree at Marquette University and Doctor of Medicine degree at UW-Madison. He completed his residency at the University of Wisconsin Hospitals and Clinics, Madison. He is a fellow in the American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology and the American College of Surgeons.
