OSHKOSH — The Oshkosh Police Department recently announced the sudden passing of K9 Magic, who became unexpectedly ill. She was found to have cancer surrounding her heart and other organs. There was nothing further medical staff could do to help Magic.

Magic, a Golden Retriever, was almost 4, and had been with the Oshkosh Police Department since March 2022. She served as a therapy dog, providing emotional support to both community members and officers.

She was paired with behavioral health officer Scott Sopata and mental health crisis specialist co-responder Kayla Rodriguez. Magic was deployed 364 times during her service with the department. She visited Oshkosh North and Oshkosh West high schools once a month, along with visits to the Day By Day Homeless Shelter, Solutions Recovery, the hospital emergency rooms and many others.

A memorial service for K9 Magic has been scheduled for Dec. 12, and is open to the public. The service will start at 10 a.m. at the Best Western Premier Hotel, 1 N. Main St.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to the Oshkosh Police Department’s K9 Program, Attn: Sgt Romanowicz, 420 Jackson St., Oshkosh, WI 54901.
