Oshkosh police mourn passing of K9 Lando, who helped seize drugs and $25,974 in currency, plus more news in weekly dose

OSHKOSH - Oshkosh Police Department recently announced the passing of K9 Lando.

Police said in a news release that K9 Lando recently became unexpectedly ill and was found to have an autoimmune disease, Myasthenia Gravis. Medical staff tried to treat the illness, the release said, but Lando was not responding and had to be euthanized.

K9 Lando was a German Shepard born July 26, 2016. He was acquired by the Oshkosh Police Department in March 2018 from K9 Services in Albuquerque, New Mexico. He was assigned to Officer Fettig from 2018 to 2020 and to Officer Martinez from 2020 to present.

During his career, K9 Lando completed 1,437.25 hours of training, 151.5 certification hours and 283 deployments. His seizure numbers are as follow:

  • Cocaine: 62.9 grams

  • Methamphetamine: 102.5 grams

  • Marijuana: 9.38 pounds

  • Fentanyl: 3.40 grams

  • MDMA: 8.71 grams

  • Heroin: 13.3 grams

  • Drug paraphernalia: 131 pieces

  • Illegally possessed prescriptions: 210 pills

  • Firearms: 3 guns

  • Bite apprehensions: 1

  • Currency seized: $25,974

  • THC oil/wax/edibles: 214.08 grams

Oshkosh Chamber announces two recent hires: Oshkosh Chamber of Commerce has welcomed Blaz Daul as its new marketing and communications coordinator and Brianna Gonnering as its new special events coordinator.

Daul graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point with a bachelor’s degree in marketing. Previously, he has held roles with Smart IS International and American Marketing and Publishing.

Daul will be responsible for implementing and maintaining the Oshkosh Chamber’s marketing, PR and communications plan.

Gonnering is a recent graduate of the University of Wisconsin-Oshkosh where she earned her bachelor’s degree in communication studies.

Before joining the Oshkosh Chamber, Gonnering was an intern for SECURA Insurance. She will be responsible for the planning and execution of chamber events, including Business After Hours, AM Oshkosh, seminars, the Business Expo, golf outings and more.

Library programs include comic drawing, edible science: Upcoming programs at Oshkosh Public Library include a meeting of the Animanga Club at 3 p.m. June 19. The group is for youth in grades 6-12. Those who attend can watch their favorite anime, browse manga and enjoy snacks.

All ages are welcome to join a comic panel drawing session from 2 to 4 p.m. June 20. Sketchy Jessi will provide examples from her work to help you polish your skills and find your own style.

The Wonderlab for June 22 will be Edible Science. The session begins at 6:30 p.m. for kids ages 5-8, who will create ice cream in a bag.

AT&T donation allows expansion of 'Connect Through Tech' program: The Oshkosh Seniors Center will offer new training courses this year for older adults impacted by the digital divide through its “Connect Through Tech” program, thanks to a $10,000 AT&T contribution.

The donation will provide classes on hearing aid technology, smart homes, automotive technology and voice activation technologies.

Since May 2020, the “Connect Through Tech” program has provided personalized technology training for adults 50 and older. In addition to personal instruction, monthly classes are offered to explore emerging technologies and digital opportunities that can improve the quality of life for older adults.

Oshkosh Area School District plans job fair June 13: Oshkosh Area School District will hold a job fair from 3 to 5 p.m. June 13 at the OASD Administration Office, 215 S. Eagle St., Oshkosh.

Available positions include teaching staff, substitutes, clerical, custodial, food service, and more with full- and part-time options.

Job seekers who attend a job fair will meet with HR staff, principals, supervisors and educators.

Pre-registration is encouraged, but not required. People can complete a job fair interest form at visit bit.ly/register-OASD-jobs.

Local blood drives planned: American Red Cross is planning the following local blood drives:

  • June 15, 2-6 p.m. at Calvary Lutheran Church, 2580 W. Ninth Ave., Oshkosh;

  • June 20, 11:45 a.m.-5 p.m. at Knights of Columbus, 746 Third St., Menasha; and

  • July 7, noon-5 p.m. at Double Tree by Hilton Neenah, 123 E. Washington Ave., Neenah.

Individuals who are 17 years in most states (16 with parental consent, where allowed by state law), weigh at least 110 pounds and are in generally good health may be eligible to donate blood. High school students and other donors 18 years of age and younger also must meet certain height and weight requirements.
