Oshkosh Turkey Trot nears, library director finalists named and more news in weekly dose

OSHKOSH — The Festival Foods Turkey Trot is set to take off at 8 a.m. Nov. 23 from the Oshkosh Seniors Center on North Campbell Road.

Parking is available in the Fox Valley Technical College parking lot, the UWO parking lot and the Verve Credit Union parking lot, as well as on the street south of Witzel Avenue.

Everyone will start from the same spot on North Campbell Road and begin in waves. The first wave will be 5-mile runners, then 2-mile fun runners, 2-mile walkers and, finally, the dog jog.

Walkers and strollers are asked to line up near the back of their respective group.

Three finalists for Oshkosh library director to make public comments

Oshkosh Public Library Board of Trustees has chosen three finalists in its search for a new library director. Former Oshkosh Public Library Director Jeff Gilderson-Duwe retired June 2. The public can attend sessions where the candidates will offer their vision for the library’s future.

The presentations will begin at 4:30 p.m. Nov. 15 in the library’s lower-level meeting room. The public will not have a chance to ask questions, but they can complete a feedback survey after the presentations.

The finalists are Desiree Bongers, director of Ripon Public Library; Darryl Eschete, director of West Des Moines Public Library, Iowa; and Holly Selwitschka, director of Kimberly Public Library.

The board intends to choose the new director by the end of the day Nov. 16.

Library programming includes book clubs, Wonderlab

Oshkosh Public Library upcoming programs include book clubs, adult DIY, kids' Wonderlab and more.

The Banned Book Club will meet at 5 p.m. Nov. 14 at Planet Perk. The book is “The Glass Castle” by Jeanette Walls.

Also on Nov. 14, at 6 p.m. the adult DIY session will meet. The craft this month is glass magnets. A reservation is required by calling 920-236-5205.

The Not Your Classic Book Club for adults will meet at 6 p.m. Nov. 16. There is no assigned book. Talk about your favorite book or a flop.

Youth ages 5 to 8 can take part in the Wonderlab: Build a Winter Village at 6:30 p.m. Nov. 16. A session for ages 9-12 will be offered at 4:30 p.m. Nov. 17. Registration is required in the children’s department or 920-236-5208.

This month’s Librarian Learns will feature Oshkosh’s Hiker Monument at 9 a.m. Nov. 17 via YouTube.

Climate advocate workshop offered Nov. 15 in Oshkosh

A climate advocate training workshop will be offered Nov. 15 by the Citizens’ Climate Lobby - Oshkosh. It will be held 6 to 7:30 p.m. at Fox Valley Technical College - Riverside Campus in Oshkosh, room 113. The workshop also will be available via Zoom.

Topics include how to be an effective climate advocate in the community, how to have effective meetings with legislators, and how to build bridges on climate policy across partisan divides. The workshop is free and open to the public.

The Citizens’ Climate Lobby is a non-partisan volunteer group that focuses on national climate action and policies. For more information, email oshkoshccl@gmail.com.

Aspiring authors welcome to join NaNoWriMo event

To help aspiring novelists during NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month), the Bookstore at Caramel Crip will host an author event at 5 p.m. Nov. 16.

Local authors Ursula Klein and Charlotte Greene, and developmental editor and author Julian Greystoke will be available to answer questions about writing and publishing.

NaNoWriMo Writers Buttons will be available to writers free anytime during November.

Good Shepherd hosts annual craft fair Nov. 18

Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 2450 W. Ninth Ave., will be hold its annual Craft Fair and Bake Sale 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Nov. 18.

Items for sale include cookies, candies, snack mixes, breads, etc. Crafts are all handmade by members of Good Shepherd. Cash, checks and credit cards will be accepted.

Oshkosh Chamber adds two staff members

The Oshkosh Chamber of Commerce has announced the addition of two new team members. Maureen Lasky has been hired as the concierge coordinator and Shannon Seaman is the education and talent coordinator.

Lasky returns to the Chamber after previously serving as the first full-time Downtown Business Improvement manager in 2010. Her new role is aimed at bolstering chamber businesses in the realms of recruitment and retention.

Seaman, originally from Waupun, will collaborate with a variety of educational institutions and the Oshkosh business community to create build communication between education and business to address workforce challenges. She will also work closely with the Amplify Oshkosh Consortium to develop and implement programs that support the technology sector.

EAA offers aviation scholarships; application deadline is March 1

Applications are being accepted for flight training now through March 1. EAA Aviation Scholarships are available to everyone older than 16.

Scholarships help cover costs at any flight school in the United States or Canada that is not a university program. Some examples of programs covered by scholarship include aerospace or aeronautical engineering, aviation business administration, air traffic control, aviation maintenance, professional flight or any aviation-related STEM field.
