Oshkosh weekly dose has news on Run with the Herd, Active Aging Week, blood drives and more

OSHKOSH - The Wisconsin Herd will host the second annual Run with the Herd 5K & 1K Family Fun Run Oct. 29.

Participants will receive one Herd home game ticket voucher, a T-shirt, a medal, a Milwaukee Bucks hat and more.

The route will start and finish at the Oshkosh Arena, 1212 S. Main St. The 5K competitive run will start at 8 a.m. with the 1K Family Fun Run to follow.

A free Fan Fest at Oshkosh Arena will be held for all participants. The event includes an award ceremony, food trucks, inflatable games, an open shoot-around on the Herd court and more.

Oshkosh Parks administrative offices move into new building

The Oshkosh Parks Department has moved its administrative offices to its new building at 805 Witzel Ave. Office hours remain the same, 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. weekdays, closed for lunch noon to 1 p.m. The phone number also stays the same, 920-236-5080.

The field operations part of the building remains under construction and is expected to be completed by the end of the year.

Oshkosh YMCA hosts events for Active Aging Week

The Oshkosh Community YMCA will mark Active Aging Week 2023 with several events Oct. 2 to 6. The International Council on Active Aging began the weeklong campaign in 2003.

Throughout the week, there will be group exercise classes, water-based exercise classes, a free lunch and presentation, a community resource fair, blood pressure screenings, an advanced planning presentation, a home safety presentation and more. This special programming is free for anyone 55 and older. The resource fair is free for anyone age 18 and older. Activities will take place at the 20th Avenue YMCA and Downtown YMCA locations.

The community resource fair will be 9 to 11:30 a.m. Oct. 5 at the 20th Avenue location. The fair will feature local organizations and businesses. Registration for the fair is not required.

Local blood drives to benefit American Red Cross

The American Red Cross is still in need of donors of all blood types. There is a particular need for platelet donors and type O blood donors.

A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification are required at check-in. Individuals who are 17, weigh at least 110 pounds and are in good health may be eligible to donate blood.

Local upcoming blood drives include the following:

  • Oct. 2: 11:45 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Algoma United Methodist Church, 1174 Algoma Blvd., Oshkosh; and

  • Oct. 6: 9 a.m. to 2 p.m., Omro High School, 455 Fox Trail.

Comedy show to benefit local woman fighting cancer

A Cancer Benefit Comedy Show to benefit April Hesser Ellestad will begin at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 17 at ZaRonis Pizza Pub, 2407 Jackson St. It is presented by Fox Valley Comedy and ZaRonis.

The event includes stand-up comedy, a silent auction and a raffle.

Part of food and drink sales also will benefit Ellestad.

The event is being held to help Ellestad with medical costs while she’s being treated for cancer.

Cash donations will be accepted by Venmo to @aellesta.
