Local blood drives help boost critically low supply

Blood supply across the country has fallen to critically low levels and the American Red Cross is asking for blood and platelet donors.

Blood products are going to hospitals faster than donations are coming in, and in recent weeks, the Red Cross said it has had to limit distributions of type O blood products — among the most transfused blood types — to hospitals.

To donate, individuals must be 17 or older, weigh at least 110 pounds, and be in general good health. A blood donor card or driver’s license or two other forms of identification will be required at check-in.

Local upcoming blood drives include the following:

  • Jan. 26: 1 to 6 p.m., YMCA Downtown, 324 Washington Ave., Oshkosh;

  • Jan. 30: 11:45 a.m. to 5 p.m., Knights of Columbus, 746 Third St., Menasha;

  • Jan. 31: Noon to 5 p.m., Double Tree by Hilton Neenah, 123 E. Wisconsin Ave.; and

  • Feb. 5: 11:45 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., Algoma United Methodist Church, 1174 Algoma Blvd., Oshkosh.

To make an appointment, download the Red Cross Blood Donor App, visit RedCrossBlood.org or call 800-733-2767.
