OSHKOSH – A former Oshkosh West standout is returning to lead the Wildcats' boys basketball team.

Dan Weisse, who starred for the Wildcats in the late 1990s, was announced as the school's boys basketball coach in a news release Wednesday morning.

“I am very excited to get back to my hometown with my family,” Weisse said in the release. “Oshkosh West has always been a special place to me. I had great teachers, great teammates and great memories here. I also had the privilege to play for Coach Steve Randall, and it will be an honor to coach on the floor that has his name on it.”

Weisse replaces Mike Johnson, who stepped down as Wildcats head coach earlier this month after compiling a 61-107 record in seven seasons. Johnson is now an assistant coach with the Neenah boys basketball program.

According to the press release, Weisse's appointment is pending approval and will be included on the agenda of the Nov. 9 Oshkosh Area School District Board of Education meeting.

“His resume speaks for itself and we are excited to not only bring on someone of his caliber but to have one of our very own graduates return to our program to impact current and future Wildcats,” Oshkosh West athletic director Brad Jodarski said. “Dan is focused on bringing a winning philosophy with a championship culture to our boys basketball program. His student-centered approach and commitment to building relationships will be an asset to our entire school community.”

Weisse is a 1999 Oshkosh West graduate and is in the school's hall of fame. He played at UW-Milwaukee under Bo Ryan and was Ryan's first recruit at UWM. He also played for current University of Wisconsin head coach Greg Gard while at UWM, as well as for Bruce Pearl.

Under Pearl, UWM advanced to the NCAA Tournament in the 2002-03 season where the 12th-seeded Panthers fell to fifth-seeded Notre Dame 70-69 in a first-round game.

Weisse's coaching resume includes stints as an assistant basketball coach at Milwaukee Rufus King, as well as a collegiate assistant at Minnesota State-Moorhead. He was also the director of basketball operations at North Dakota State University.

Most recently he was the head men's basketball coach at the University of Minnesota-Crookston, where he compiled a 66-152 record in eight seasons.
