OSHP: Road rage incidents on the rise in Ohio

Road rage incidents are on the rise, according to new data from the Ohio State Highway Patrol (OSHP).

From 2018 to 2022, OSHP reported around 15 percent more road rage incidents. During that five-year timeframe, the number of road rage incidents reported was as follows:

  • 2018: 1,765

  • 2019: 1,755

  • 2020: 1,738

  • 2021: 2,035

  • 2022: 2,043

New data from OSHP showed that there were 117 road rage incidents in Montgomery County last year. That was a 65 percent increase from the year prior.

Over the last five years, Montgomery County had the fourth most road rage incidents in the state with 364. Only Warren, Portage, and Delaware counties had more incidents reported.

The data shared with News Center 7 shows that the number of road rage incidents started to spike after the pandemic started. OSHP Sgt. Tyler Ross told our news partners at WCPO in Cincinnati some drivers who may have gotten used to going faster on empty roads haven’t adjusted since normal traffic has returned.

“I think they’re losing their patience,” Ross said.

Ross told WCPO that if you’re involved in a road rage incident, it’s important to remove yourself as quickly as possible.
