Ostrich chicks and other young animals abound at Eudora Farms

Oct. 23—SALLEY — Eudora Farms Wildlife Safari Park recently added two baby ostriches to its menagerie that also includes zebras, lemurs and eland.

The chicks "hatched kind of late, at the very end of summer or the first of fall," said Eudora Farms owner Mark Nisbet.

Ostriches are the biggest and heaviest birds in the world. They can weigh more than 300 pounds and stand up to nine feet tall.

Chicks are around 10 inches tall and usually weigh 2 to 2.6 pounds.

Eudora Farms' baby ostriches, which are the first to ever hatch at the park, won't be available for the public to view for a while.

"We want to give them a little extra care," Nisbet said. "It's starting to get a little too cool for them. We probably won't have them out in the park until this coming spring."

There still are, however, plenty of young animals to see at Eudora Farms.

Among them are water buffalo, wildebeest, rheas, Highland cattle and alpacas.

"Part of having a drive-thru park is for people to be able to see that the animals are reproducing and being born," Nisbet said. "They (the babies) are one of the highlights for visitors, for sure."

Eudora Farms is located at 219 Salem Lane.
