OSU Extension: New 4-H advisors needed in Fairfield County

Do you want to inspire future generations of 4-Hers? The Fairfield County 4-H Program needs you! The Fairfield County 4-H Program continues to see the interest in community club participation grow and we need volunteers to make that happen. Volunteers and parents help make 4-H possible. Without 4-H volunteers and parents the program would not have the mentors and leaders that 4-Hers need in order to learn the new skills that 4-H has to offer youth. With each volunteer comes knowledge, experiences, and skills which can be taught to 4-H youth and shared with the 4-H program “to make the best better.” Volunteers and parents are a major reason for 4-H’s success in youth development. Since 1902, parents and volunteers have helped the 4-H program develop successful leaders, build young minds, and set the path for 4-Hers to take the world by storm.

The dedication and commitment of our volunteers make 4-H Youth Development possible. Volunteers generously offer their time, expertise and provide support for hundreds of 4-H programs all over Ohio. There is no specific age requirement to be a 4-H Volunteer. Youth volunteers, with the emotional maturity and leadership ability necessary to function in a volunteer role, are important partners in Ohio 4-H programs. Ohio 4-H works with a variety of individuals, with differing interests, skills and abilities, as 4-H volunteers.

If you have been thinking of getting more involved with 4-H, now is the time to apply to be a club volunteer. Current clubs need help which means you don’t have to start a new club!! Information and application can be found here at go.osu.edu/fcvolunteer. Have questions? Contact our office at 740-653-5419! Application deadline is Feb. 1.

Do you want to start a 4-H Club?

Now is the time! We are looking for interested adults to volunteer as 4-H advisors and start new 4-H clubs in the county. Now is the perfect time to get organized! Contact Leslie Cooksey or Aubry Fowler TODAY to get started in this process! Both can be reached at 740-653-5419.

Are you dreaming about your summer color palate in your garden? Check out the Gardener's Book of Color

I tend to stick with a cool color pallet in my garden beds. I use pink and not red, peach and not orange. I so admire those “hot” color gardens but I find this choice the most pleasing for me. The Gardener's Book of Color by Andrew Lawson caters to every one of these tastes and to every mood. It explores soothing gardens based on varying hues of greens and restrained color palettes and describes how harmonies and contrasts create a combination of stimulating, pleasing color. Lawson describes the importance of foliage forms, how the shapes of plants and plantings to contribute to an effective garden design, and how plant choices extend to the color of their foliage, stems, bark and berries. The chapters on individual colors feature plant directories with recommendations for a variety of seasonal plants. The notes include brief descriptions of the plant, it’s cultivation requirements, and botanical and common names. The author is also a noted garden photographer and the illustrations in this volume are stunning.
