Ottawa County chief judge recognized by State Bar of Michigan for work in family law

HOLLAND — The State Bar of Michigan has awarded Ottawa County 20th Circuit Court Chief Judge Jon Van Allsburg with the Marilyn J. Kelly Award for Outstanding Judicial Service in Family Law.

The State Bar established the Kelly Award in 2015, honoring former Michigan Supreme Court Chief Justice Marilyn J. Ottawa County announced Van Allsburg’s receipt of the award in a press release Monday, Nov. 29.

Van Allsburg handles the Family Division docket at the 20th Circuit Court, and has been appointed by the Michigan Supreme Court to serve as business court judge and chief judge.

He also writes family law opinions, is active with the Family Law Section of the State Bar of Michigan and is a frequent lecturer and presenter for judicial and attorney continuing education programs.

"Assisting families as they navigate complicated and often divisive legal situations is an extremely rewarding part of my service as a Circuit Court Judge," Van Allsburg said in a release. "Promoting the rule of law with respect, compassion and patience for the litigants and attorneys appearing in Court is how we provide excellent public service while administering justice and resolving these often-complex court cases."
