PORT CLINTON - When Rose Sabin steps on the dance floor as a celebrity competitor for Dancing with the Stars – Ottawa County Style on Saturday, she will express the same mission that defines her three businesses: Soul Stretch Yoga, Soul Stretch Cycle and Root to Rise Wellness Bar. Sabin will sidestep into a little empowerment and twirl out a bit of inspiration.

“Our mission is about educating, empowering and inspiring. That’s our elevated intention for the evening,” she said.

Dancing with the Stars is a widely popular annual fundraiser for Ottawa County Family Advocacy Center, which has become a foundational support for hundreds of people in the community. The organization’s programs include CASA, TNT Mentoring, GRANDlove, Konnections and Fuel for Kids.

Dancing competition raises funds for Family Advocacy Center

Dancing with the Stars competitors will compete to raise the most money for the Family Advocacy Center. Donations can be made directly to the dancers prior to the event, and, on the day of the event, the audience votes using dollars. The judges — Debbie Tester as Carrie Ann, Bert Fall as Bruno and Pat Adkins as Len — judge and score the dancers.

Sabin will compete against Charles Allen, the Lakeside Chautauqua interim president and CEO; Lisa Chura, Port Clinton Schools champion for children coordinator; Oak Harbor City Administrator Randy Genzman; Genoa Bank Management Trainee Emily Lenke; and Ryan Clifton, a leader and mentor in the local recovery community.

Sabin is training for the competition with longtime dance instructor Lisa Ramsey. This is Ramsey’s 12th season with Dancing with the Stars.

“Rose is a lot of fun. She’s making my job easy,” Ramsey said.

Ramsey volunteers for Dancing with the Stars because she recognizes the impact the Family Advocacy Center has on the community.

“It’s just an awesome organization, and I love CASA,” Ramsey said. “I’ve been dancing since I was 4. It’s a huge part of my life. To encompass dance with giving back is amazing.”

Sabin agreed to be a Dancing with the Stars competitor because she, too, believes in the importance of the Family Advocacy Center.

“I’m all about giving back to the community.  It’s karma-yoga,” she said. “The event benefits so many programs, and the money stays local. That’s the thing about this. I love that it all stays local.”

Sabin is passionate about supporting kids and seniors, and this is one more way she can help them.

“This will help seniors, kids and people in our own backyard,” she said.

Plus, she plans to have a lot of fun.

“I plan to do a lot of laughing, and I’m bringing a secret weapon,” she said. “Lisa is the professional. I’m just going to have fun.”

But, like all the competitors, she hopes to win.

“The dancer with the most money raised wins the coveted Mirror Ball Trophy, and the dancer with the highest score wins Judges’ Choice. The judges do an amazing job. They really get into it,” said Connie Roe, executive director of the Family Advocacy Center. “They take it pretty seriously. They see how well the dance partners work together and how the audience reacts. They really do look for fun as well as good dancing.”

Dancing with the Stars – Ottawa County Style will be held Saturday at Sunrise Park and Banquet Center at 29208 Millbury Road, Millbury. Doors open at 5:30 p.m. and dinner begins at 6. Tickets for Dancing with the Stars cost $55 and can be purchased from any dancer, by calling 419-301-0225, or at the door.

“I say that anyone who walks in with a wallet gets in,” Roe said. “All of the funds raised stay right here in Ottawa County to support families and children.”
