Ottawa County Fair arrives with rides, animals, evening entertainment

OAK HARBOR — The Ottawa County Fair kicks off Monday with free harness racing, as the fair celebrates its 58th year with a full schedule next week of 4-H activities, animal judging and evening grandstand entertainment.

Zak Avers, Ottawa County's fair board president, said one of the big new changes at the fair this year is that access to midway mechanical rides and inflatables will be included in the fair's $6 general admission fee.

EGO Amusements is suppling rides and inflatables this year, Avers said.

Ottawa County's fair last year drew about 12,000 people, he said.

"If the temperatures keep dropping, we should be able to get to 12,000," Avers said.

Monday's fair activities included 4-H animal judging and free harness racing at the grandstand, with the Ottawa County Grande Fair Parade at 7 p.m. and Jr. Fair King and Queen contest at 8 p.m.

Free harness racing returns Tuesday at 5 p.m., with an Ace of Clubs Hog Calling Contest at 6:30 p.m.

Wednesday is Senior Citizens Day, with free admission for all visitors 65 and older. There will be a chainsaw carving exhibition at 6:30 p.m. with autocross starting at 7 p.m. at the grandstand.

The Rafter M. Rodeo is one of Thursday's highlights and starts at 7 p.m.

Friday features livestock sales in the morning and the Twisted Metal Demolition Derby at 7 p.m.

Avers said the demolition derby is usually one of the most well-attended events at the f air.

Veterans get free admission to Saturday's fair, with OSTPA tractor pulls scheduled to begin at 7:30 p.m.

The Ottawa County Fair concludes July 24 with Red-Neck Garden Tractor Pulls at noon and a draft horse show that starts at 11 a.m.
