Ottawa County man arrested on child obscenity charges

PORT CLINTON - The Ottawa County Sheriff's Office and Ottawa County SWAT team took Matthew Shiffert, 29, into custody on Friday on charges related to obscenity involving a minor .

Shiffert was transported to the county jail and charged with and four counts of pandering obscenity involving a minor, a second-degree felony, and one count of failure to register, a fourth-degree felony, according to a news release from the sheriff's detective bureau.

Shiffert is a registered sex offender in Ottawa County. He pleaded guilty in 2019 to 15 counts of illegal use of a minor in nudity-oriented material and four counts of pandering sexually oriented matter involving a minor, the News Herald previously reported.

He was sentenced in 2019 to serve up to 180 days in the Community Corrections Center of Lebanon and three years of community control.

As part of the 2019 sentence, Shiffert is required to register as a Tier 2 sex offender with the sheriff’s office every six months for a period of 25 years and is not allowed to live within 1,000 feet of a school, preschool or daycare premises.

Shiffert's arrest Friday came after a search warrant was executed at a residence at 19535 W. Moline Martin Road in Martin.

The sheriff's office said the Internet Crimes Against Children Task Force (ICAC) received information in January and conducted an investigation into crimes against children in Ottawa County.

The search warrant led to the seizure of multiple electronic devices involving information received by ICAC.
