Ottawa Lake man killed when motorcycle, pickup collide

WHITEFORD TOWNSHIP – An Ottawa Lake man died when the motorcycle he was riding collided with a pickup Thursday morning.

The Monroe County Sheriff’s Office reported the crash occurred at about 5:15 a.m. Thursday at Clark and Yankee roads in Whiteford Township.

The victim was identified as Jason A. Simbeck, 41, of Ottawa Lake.

Deputies reported Simbeck was riding a 2022 Honda CMX 300 motorcycle eastbound on Yankee. As he approached the intersection, Simbeck disregarded the posted stop sign.

The Simbeck motorcycle struck a 2012 Chevrolet Silverado pickup operated by Andrew J. Marchal, 32, of Riga. The pickup was being driven southbound on Clark. Upon impact, Simbeck fell from his motorcycle coming to rest in the southbound lane of Clark Road.

Simbeck’s motorcycle came to rest toward the roadway’s shoulder, facing southwest. The Silverado rotated in a clockwise motion, leaving the roadway to the west, coming to rest in the west side ditch of Clark Road, facing northbound.

Simbeck was pronounced dead at the scene from injuries suffered in the crash. Marchal was not injured and was released.

At the time of the crash, Simbeck was not wearing a helmet while Marchal was wearing his seat belt. Airbags in the Chevrolet deployed upon impact.

Driver inattention is a factor in the crash, deputies said.

Members of the Ottawa Lake Volunteer Fire Department, Monroe Community Ambulance and Michigan State Police along wth Monroe County Sheriff's Office Senior Chaplin Mark McCaskill assisted at the scene.

The crash remains under investigation by Sgt. Brian Quinn and deputies Nicholas Burkhart, Cody Carena and Jon Cregar of the Monroe County Sheriff’s Office Traffic Services Division.
