OU football: Four-star quarterback Nick Evers pledges to Sooners' 2022 recruiting class

NORMAN — Brent Venables has his first OU commit.

And it's a big one.

The Sooners picked up a commitment from four-star quarterback Nick Evers on Monday morning, after a weekend visit to Norman.

Evers (6-foot-3, 187 pounds) is the No. 4 dual-threat quarterback in the 2022 class, according to Rivals.

The Flower Mound, Texas, product was committed to Florida from March until Tuesday, when he announced he was reopening his commitment.

Under Lincoln Riley, the Sooners didn't have a 2022 quarterback commitment.

But with Spencer Rattler announcing his decision to enter the NCAA transfer portal and Caleb Williams having yet to make a public declaration whether or not he was staying, securing a quarterback in the class became one of Venables' top priorities.

It didn't take long for OU to narrow in on Evers, who had been recruited by Jeff Lebby when Lebby was at Ole Miss. Lebby is now the Sooners' offensive coordinator.

The Sooners needed to add depth at quarterback even if Williams ultimately stays. After Williams took over as the started in early October, Rattler was his backup, followed by freshman walk-on Ralph Rucker. Behind him, the Sooners have another freshman walk-on in Ben Harris and Penn State transfer Micah Bowens, a redshirt freshman.

The Sooners added another commitment Monday from a familiar face — linebacker Kobie McKinzie of Lubbock, Texas.

McKinzie had been a longtime Sooners commit before backing off after Riley's departure to USC.

The four-star inside linebacker then committed to Texas on Dec. 5 and remained committed to the Longhorns until Monday when he announced on Twitter, "I'm back."

In a later Tweet, McKinzie added, "Oh and I'm not coming back by myself."

Two players who decommitted after Riley's departure remain uncommitted — offensive lineman Demetrius Hunter and defensive lineman Derrick Moore.

Evers' and McKinzie's commitments give the Sooners 14 commits in the 2022 class, which can begin signing Wednesday.
