NORMAN — OU added a major piece to its 2023 football recruiting class Friday when four-star wide receiver Anthony Evans III committed to the Sooners.

A bit later, OU added another big piece with the commitment of four-star cornerback Makari Vickers.

Evans, from Converse (Texas) Judson, is the No. 28 wide receiver in the class, according to Rivals.

Evans was committed to Arkansas until April, when he reopened his recruitment.

The commitment is a big recruiting victory for L'Damian Washington, the Sooners' interim wide receiver coach who replaced longtime assistant Cale Gundy earlier this month after Gundy resigned. Offensive coordinator Jeff Lebby was a major part of Evans' recruitment as well.

Evans is the third 2023 wide receiver to commit to the Sooners, joining Keyon Brown and Jaquaize Pettaway.

Vickers (6-2, 195) chose the Sooners over Michigan and Alabama.

Vickers, from Tallahassee (Florida) Robert F. Munroe Day School, joins Jasiah Wagoner as cornerbacks committing to the Sooners.

With the additions of Evans and Vickers, the Sooners jumped up to No. 6 on Rivals' rankings for the 2023 class.

Former Washington RB Emeka Megwa transfers to OU

Earlier Friday, there were indications the Sooners could be adding another running back on campus.

Emeka Megwa, who enrolled at Washington early last season but did not see any game action for the Huskies, is listed in the OU student database and changed the profile photo on his verified Instagram account to one of him wearing a Sooners uniform. His biography on the site says he’s an OU running back as well. An OU spokesman told The Oklahoman he wasn't aware of Megwa being added to the roster.

Megwa would join an OU running back room headed by Eric Gray. Behind Gray, who rushed for 539 yards and four touchdowns last season, is Marcus Major, Central Florida transfer Bentavious Thompson, and a pair of freshmen — Jovantae Barnes and Gavin Sawchuk.

Megwa was a Rivals four-star athlete out of Fort Worth’s TImber Creek High School after transferring from Nolan Catholic after his junior season.

He rushed for 730 yards and 12 touchdowns on 133 carries in the Covid-19 shortened 2020 season.

As a sophomore in 2019, Megwa rushed for 1,786 yards and 27 touchdowns.

He was originally part of the 2022 class but enrolled at Washington early, arriving on campus before the Huskies' Sept. 25 game against Cal.

Megwa entered the NCAA transfer portal in early August.
