Bob Stoops to receive Paul "Bear" Bryant Lifetime Achievement Award

Former OU football coach Bob Stoops will receive the 2022 Paul "Bear" Bryant Lifetime Achievement Award, which is presented by the American Heart Association.

The award honors college football's top coaches for outstanding achievement and extraordinary contribution on and off the field.

Stoops, who will be presented the award on Jan. 11 in Houston, is the winningest coach in Sooner football history. He retired in 2017 after spending 18 years as head coach. Stoops briefly came out of retirement to coach OU during the Alamo Bowl last season after Lincoln Riley left for the USC job.

Sooners to debut new 'Unity' uniform vs. Kansas

The OU football team will debut its new alternate uniform on Saturday vs. Kansas at Gaylord Family-Oklahoma Memorial Stadium. The "unity" uniform was designed by students to emphasize the importance of togetherness and building relationships to better society.

The uniform will also honor former Sooners running back Prentice Gautt, who was the first Black scholarship football player at OU.

The uniform will feature anthracite-colored jerseys, pants and helmets with crimson trim and lettering. The word "TOGETHER" will be sewn on the collar and the word "UNITY" on the back-of-the-jersey nameplate. An outline of the state of Oklahoma will be on each sleeve.

Big 12 preseason basketball team announced

Avery Anderson III of Oklahoma State and Grant Sherfield of Oklahoma are recognized on the All-Big 12 men's preseason basketball team.

Anderson, a 6-foot-3 senior guard, is on the first team. Sherfield, a 6-2 guard, is the Newcomer of the Year after previously playing for Wichita State and Nevada.

Other members of the first team are Baylor guard Adam Flagler; Kansas forward Jalen Wilson; TCU guard Mike Miles Jr.; Texas forward Timmy Allen; and Texas guard Marcus Carr.

OSU's Moussa Cisse and OU's Tanner Groves were honorable mention picks.

The preseason accolades were selected by a vote of Big 12 coaches.

Dodgers slip by Padres in Game 1 of NLDS

Trea Turner homered and doubled as the Los Angeles Dodgers started fast and held off the San Diego Padres 5-3 in their NL Division Series opener. The Dodgers raced to an early 5-0 lead and appeared to be on their way to another blowout of the Padres. Los Angeles dominated in the regular season, owning a 14-5 advantage and outscoring San Diego 109-47. With Sandy Koufax watching from the owners’ box, 17-game winner Julio Urías retired the first eight batters. Chris Martin pitched a scoreless ninth for Los Angeles.

YANKEES 4, GUARDIANS 1: Gerrit Cole cruised for most of the night, Harrison Bader and Anthony Rizzo homered and the New York Yankees beat the Cleveland Guardians 4-1 in their AL Division Series opener at Yankee Stadium. New York has won six straight postseason games against Cleveland dating to a comeback from a two games to none deficit in the 2017 Division Series.

ANGELS: A Texas judge sentenced former Los Angeles Angels director of communications Eric Kay to 22 years in federal prison Tuesday in connection with the 2019 death of pitcher Tyler Skaggs. Kay, 48, was facing a minimum sentence of 20 years after being convicted earlier this year of distributing the fentanyl-laced opioids that resulted in Skaggs' overdose. He received two additional years of prison time after prosecutors revealed disparaging comments Kay made about Skaggs in recent months while awaiting sentencing.

Raiders' Adams charged with assault

Las Vegas Raiders receiver Davante Adams has been charged with misdemeanor assault for shoving a photographer to the ground as he left the field following a loss at Kansas City. Police said Adams pushed Ryan Zebley to the ground while running off the field following the Raiders’ 30-29 loss to the Chiefs at Arrowhead Stadium on Monday night. Police called it an “intentional, overt act” that caused whiplash, a headache and a possible minor concussion. Adams apologized in his postgame comments to the media and later on Twitter.

Warriors' Green fined for punching teammate

Draymond Green has been fined but won’t be suspended by the Golden State Warriors for a violent punch to the face of teammate Jordan Poole last week. Coach Steve Kerr said after a preseason win against Portland that Green would return to practice Thursday then play for the defending NBA champions against the Nuggets on Friday night and again in the season opener Tuesday against the Lakers.

Kerr, general manager Bob Myers and players have met to decide how to best proceed, including Green and Poole talking to each other. The fine amount was not released.
