OU softball: Jocelyn Alo, Jordy Bahl take home national awards

OU's Jocelyn Alo repeated as the USA Softball Collegiate Player of the Year on Tuesday, while teammate Jordy Bahl was named the NFCA/Schutt Sports Division I National Freshman of the Year.

The Sooners are the first program to sweep the awards in consecutive seasons.

The winners were announced at the Women's College World Series' team-only banquet Tuesday night in Oklahoma City.

Alo is the fifth player and second Sooner to repeat as the player of the year. OU's Keilani Ricketts won the award in 2012 and 2013.

Bahl is the third OU player in four years to take home freshman honors, and fourth in the award's eight-year history.

Tiare Jennings won the award last season, Alo in 2018 and Paige Parker in 2015.

Alo, who became the NCAA career home-run leader on March 12, is hitting .497 with 72 RBIs and 29 home runs. She's leading the country in slugging percentage (1.163) and on-base percentage (.634).

In the NCAA Tournament, Alo is hitting .643 with four home runs and 10 RBIs. She has hit a home run in four of OU's five games.

Bahl is 21-1 with a 0.95 ERA, striking out 199 with 29 walks in 132 ⅓ innings pitched. Opponents are hitting just .137 against her, with just 16 extra-base hits and three home runs. Bahl has one perfect game and one other no-hitter this season, and combined on another perfect game and two no-hitters.

Bahl hasn't pitched since May 6, a day before she suffered a forearm injury in a pregame warmup.

The Sooners (54-2) open the WCWS against Northwestern at 1:30 p.m. Thursday at USA Softball Hall of Fame Stadium.
