OU vs. Baylor football: Turnovers plague Sooners & more key stats from loss to Bears

NORMAN — The Sooners fell short of victory on Saturday.

OU suffered a 38-35 home loss to Baylor. The Sooners were hindered by three turnovers in the losing effort and remain one win away from becoming bowl eligible.

Here's a look at the loss by the numbers:

OU and Baylor break even after first quarter

4: Dillon Gabriel ran for a 10-yard touchdown that gave OU a 7-0 lead with 11:13 left in the first quarter. This marked the redshirt junior quarterback's fourth rushing touchdown of the season, which ties a career-high total he set as a freshman at UCF.

2: A pass by Gabriel got deflected with 5:01 left in the first quarter, and Baylor's Dillon Doyle made the interception. After not throwing a pick in OU's first five games, Gabriel has thrown at least one in two of the team's last three games.

65: Gabriel connected with Marvin Mims for a 65-yard touchdown that tied the game at 14-14 with 3:01 left in the first quarter.

Turnovers plague OU in the second quarter

10: A pass by Gabriel bounced off the hand of Brayden Willis and got intercepted by Baylor's Devin Lemear on the first play of the second quarter. The Bears kicked a field goal four plays later, giving them 10 points off turnovers.

113: Craig Williams ran for a 1-yard touchdown that gave Baylor a 24-14 lead with 9:06 left in the second quarter. The junior running back recorded 12 carries for 113 yards in the first half. This marked the most rushing yards an opposing player has recorded in a half against OU this season.

6: Sophomore safety Billy Bowman intercepted a pass by Baylor's Blake Shapen with 3:10 left until halftime. OU's defense has recorded six interceptions in its last three outings.

3: A pass intended for Jalil Farooq bounced off his hands and got intercepted by Baylor's Christian Morgan with 1:52 left until halftime. This marked the third interception of the day for Gabriel. The last and only other time he threw three picks in a game was against Cincinnati on Nov. 4, 2019.

55: Zach Schmit attempted what would've been a career-long field goal from 55 yards out with five seconds left until halftime. It went wide left, and Baylor entered halftime with a 24-21 lead.

OU's defense sets the tone in the third quarter

1: Baylor went 1-for-3 on third-down attempts in the third quarter.

-2: After running for 113 yards on 12 carries in the first half, Williams was held to -2 rushing yards on five carries in the third quarter.

2: Drake Stoops hauled in a 9-yard touchdown that trimmed Baylor's lead to 31-28 with 4:52 left in the third quarter. This marked the redshirt senior's second touchdown of the season, which ties a career-high total.

Eric Gray's takeover falls short

8: Eric Gray made eight catches for 58 yards. This tied a career-high number of receptions in a game for the senior running back.

23: Gray ran the ball 23 times for 106 yards and two touchdowns. This marked the most carries for him in a game since he ran the ball 31 times as a player at Tennessee in a loss to Arkansas on Nov. 7, 2020.

43: Baylor faced a 3rd-and-3 at the 50-yard line with 2:06 left in the game when Williams ran for a gain of 43 yards. Baylor then ran out the clock to secure the 38-35 win.

2014: OU has lost two home games this season. It marks the first time the Sooners have lost at least two home games in a season since 2014. They lost three home games that season.
