OU wrestling coach Lou Rosselli departs Sooners after seven seasons

Lou Rosselli has resigned as OU wrestling head coach after seven seasons in Norman, the school announced Wednesday.

Rosselli, who posted a 56-49 dual record with the Sooners, joined OU in 2016 after a 10-year stint as an assistant coach at Ohio State.

Under Rosselli's reign, OU wrestlers earned 48 NCAA qualifications and four All-America honors.

"Today I'm stepping down as the head wrestling coach here at OU," Rosselli said in a school release. "I'm grateful for the opportunity I had from Joe (Castiglione) to lead this program. While I had hoped to have accomplished more, I'm optimistic about the future of Oklahoma wrestling. I'm thankful to my current and former student-athletes, our coaching staff, and our fans for their support throughout the years."

The Sooners won their first Big 12 wrestling title in the 2020-21 season and finished 24th at the NCAA Championships. But the Sooners dipped to 9-8 overall for the 2022-23 season, including a 2-6 mark in conference play.

"Lou has invested a great deal into our wrestling program these past seven years, and we're so grateful for the impact he's made on our student-athletes," OU athletic director Joe Castiglione said. "We sincerely appreciate his service to the university and wish him all the best. As we move forward, we will continue to position our wrestling program to compete at the highest level."

OU's Jacob Groves enters portal; Grant Sherfield declares for NBA Draft

Another day, another hole to fill on the OU men's basketball roster.

Jacob Groves announced his decision to enter the transfer portal on Wednesday, the same day that senior guard Grant Sherfield declared for the NBA Draft.

Groves, a 6-foot-9 senior forward, averaged 6.8 points and 2.5 rebounds as a senior this season. He started in 22 games but ultimately finished the campaign off the bench.

Groves’ departure comes after the graduation of his older brother, Tanner Groves. The two began their careers at Eastern Washington before transferring to OU in April 2021.

Sherfield, a Nevada transfer, became a key contributor in his lone season at OU. He averaged team-highs of 15.9 points and 3.3 assists, which earned him an All-Big 12 honorable mention.

The Sooners depended on Sherfield for scoring production. They went 0-5 in games when their veteran guard failed to score double digit points.

This marks the second time that Sherfield has declared for the NBA Draft. The 6-2 guard declared for last year's draft before ultimately return to the college level and transferring to OU.

Extra points

OKC DODGERS: For a third consecutive game, the Oklahoma City Dodgers bested their opponent by one run during a high-scoring game, claiming a 7-6 victory over the Las Vegas Aviators Tuesday night at Las Vegas Ballpark. Jahmai Jones continued his recent hot streak, hitting two home runs and picking up a total of five RBI.

MLB: Bryce Harper has taken on-field batting practice for the first time since Tommy John surgery last fall. The Philadelphia Phillies said Harper hit on the field before Tuesday night’s game at Yankee Stadium. Harper, a two-time National League MVP, was operated on last Nov. 23 and was projected to return as a designated hitter by the All-Star break. He appears to be on track for an earlier return, and Philadelphia has Harper on the 10-day injured list rather than the 60, which would have ruled him out until May 29.
