Outdoor burning ban issued in city of Erie; includes recreational fires

The city of Erie has issued a ban on all outdoor burning — including recreational fires — until further notice because of the region's unusually dry weather conditions.

City officials made the announcement Wednesday afternoon. The ban does not include enclosed outdoor grills.

City officials said that during the last week, Erie Bureau of Fire crews have responded to 24 emergency calls for brush fires and related incidents.

“People need to be aware of the extremely dry conditions,” Assistant Fire Chief Leonard Trott said. "Carefully discard smoking materials and don’t do any burning until we get a significant amount of rain.”

The city is also advising residents to refrain from fireworks and flame-illuminated lanterns and/or similar items while the ban is in effect.

According to the National Weather Service, there is a chance of rain both Thursday and Friday in the region, with high temperatures in the upper 60s both days.
