Opening day success

Ohio’s annual deer gun hunting week started with 21,754 deer checked Monday, Nov. 29, the opening day of the season. During the past three years, hunters took an average of 13,349 deer on opening day.

Ohio’s weather for this year’s opening day was perfect for deer hunting; mostly to partly sunny and cool temperatures. In 2020, during a snowy and rainy gun opener, hunters bagged 10,905 deer.

The top 10 counties for deer harvest on the opening day of Ohio’s gun season include: Coshocton (850), Tuscarawas (729), Ashtabula (725), Knox (679), Muskingum (677), Holmes (650), Guernsey (642), Carroll (607), Licking (572), and Ashland (504). In 2020, Coshocton County also led the state on opening day with 356 deer taken.

This year's Holmes County opening-day harvest was up a whopping 287 over the three-year average, while in Wayne County, the harvest was 251 compared to the three-year average of 158. In Ashland County, hunters checked in 504 deer on opening day, up from the three-year average of 282.

Audubon bird walk

A Greater Mohican Audubon Society Bird Walk will be held 9-11 a.m. Saturday at Secrest Arboretum in Wooster. Participants are encouraged to take a pair of binoculars. Meet in the parking lot in front of the Welcome Center. For more information, contact Tim Leslie at ‪419-289-2626‬.

New Year's Day shoot

The East Holmes Sportsman's Association will hold a trap shoot Jan. 1 starting at 8:30 a.m. Prizes the first three hours will be meat, with money paybacks after that.

Indoor archery league

The Wayne County Archers will hold indoor archery leagues starting Tuesday. The club will have morning and evening hours, and will offer lessons for all ages. For more information, look up Wayne County Archers on Facebook or call Dave Fletcher at 330-466-0067.

Apple Creek Legion still shoot

The Apple Creek American Legion, Post 147, 8498 Hackett Road, will hold its last still shoot of the year on Sunday. Breakfast begins at 10 a.m., registration at 10:30 a.m. and shoot at noon.
