OUTDOOR NOTES: Still shoots, hunting classes, Mohican Forest open house

Hunter education classes

The Shreve Farmer’s Sportsman Club will hold its annual hunter education classes 6-9 p.m. Aug. 18-19 and noon-5 p.m. Aug. 20. All first-time hunters must pass the class before obtaining a hunting license.

To register, contact the ODNR at 1-800-WILDLIFE or log onto wildlife.ohiodnr.gov. Participants must attend all three days and pass the test to obtain the certification. For general information or directions, contact Missy at 330-464-5621.

Fall still shoots

Fall Still shoots will be held at the Shreve Farmer's Sportsman Club beginning Aug. 7 and running every Sunday through Oct. 30. Shoots start at noon with sign up starting around 11:30 a.m. Participants shoot shot, 22 and slug. Try for a chance to win a variety of meat and cash prizes. The progressive jackpot is over $4,500.

Youth Outdoors Skills Day

The Ohio Sportsmen Farmers League is hosting its annual Youth Outdoors Skills Day on Sunday, Aug. 7. Events will include archery, air rifle range, trapshooting, zip line, and trapping demonstrations. Lunch and water will be provided plus door prizes will be given out at the end of the day.

Participation is free, but limited to 60 youths, ages 8–16 years old. Required sign-in is 11-11:45 a.m. with the program running from noon-6 p.m. The event will be held at the OSFL club grounds located at 1755 Jacoby Roa Copley. Mohican Forest open house

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources Division of Forestry invites the public to attend in-person open house events to learn more about management plans for Ohio’s state forests. Held annually, this year’s open house for Mohican Forest is scheduled for 4:30-6:30 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 25, at the Loudonville library, 122 East Main St.

Open house information and the draft annual work plan are posted on the Division of Forestry’s State Forest Work Plan webpage. To submit written comments send an email with name to DNR-stateforestworkplancomments@dnr.ohio.gov.

Women’s outdoor weekend

The Ohio Department of Natural Resources will hold its eighth annual Ohio Women’s Outdoor Adventures weekend, which will be held at Hueston Woods State Park and Lodge, Sept. 16-18.

Hosted by ODNR divisions of Parks and Watercraft, Forestry, and Wildlife, Ohio Women’s Outdoor Adventure is a weekend program that introduces women to outdoor skills such as boating, fishing, hunting, and nature programming. It is open to women 16 years and older (minors must be accompanied by a parent or guardian) and is tailored to beginners.

This year’s participants will be able to choose between a variety of outdoor activities and sessions including kayaking, disc golf, sailing, standup paddle boarding, fishing, dutch oven cooking, hiking, gun basics, and more.

Participants will stay the weekend at the Hueston Woods State Park Lodge and Conference Center, located in College Corner, near Oxford. Hueston Woods’ thousands of land and water acres provide plenty of areas for exploration. Guests will have access to the indoor and outdoor pools, restaurant and lounge, and professional golf course.

The cost is $350 per person, based on double occupancy, and includes lodging, five meals, a T-shirt, transportation between venues, and evening activities. There are 95 spots open for this year’s event.
