Two co-headlining acts who feel like long-lost friends are returning to Boise.

Gifted multi-instrumentalist Andrew Bird and Grammy-winning acoustic trio Nickel Creek will perform Sunday, July 7, at the Idaho Botanical Garden’s Outlaw Field.

Bird, who will close the show, hasn’t played in Boise in 15 years. For Nickel Creek? It’s been a decade.

Tickets to the 6 p.m. concert become available to the general public at 10 a.m. Friday for $59.50 at Ticketmaster. A presale for Idaho Botanical Garden members starts at 10 a.m. Tuesday, with tickets costing $54.50.

A gifted violinist, singer and guitarist — not to mention fantastic whistler — Bird has dazzled fans for decades.

Although he’s considered an indie-rocker, Bird started out in jazz-influenced groups. Notably, he was a member of the swing band Squirrel Nut Zippers in the 1990s.

Bird’s album “My Finest Work Yet” was nominated for a Best Folk Album Grammy Award in 2020.

Adventurous trio Nickel Creek first took the music world by storm in 2000, releasing a self-titled (but not debut) album that re-imagined bluegrass rules. Produced by Alison Krauss, it was a genre-blending, platinum-selling showcase for Chris Thile (mandolin) and siblings Sara Watkins (fiddle) and Sean Watkins (guitar).

The group won a Grammy for Best Contemporary Folk album in 2003 for its fourth album, “This Side.” In 2007, Nickel Creek took a seven-year break — allowing the musicians to pursue solo endeavors — before regrouping in 2014.

This is the second concert announced so far at 4,000-capacity Outlaw Field in 2024. Also scheduled: Mt. Joy on Thursday, Aug. 15.
