Get outdoors and rock as great shows take to beaches from Ocean City to Lewes

Live entertainment will literally be heating up on beach concert stages in the days ahead — with a large number of these events taking place outside.

In Lewes, the annual Rocking the Docks Music Series is set to kick off in fine fashion with a concert by national lap steel virtuoso Robert Randolph on the first official day of summer — Wednesday, June 21 ($26). Randolph and his backing band will take the stage following a 6 p.m. opening set by local trio Lower Case Blues.

The all-ages concert series takes place outside on the green at the Cape May-Lewes Ferry terminal. It continues every Wednesday at 6 p.m. through Aug. 23, with headliners including Dumpstaphunk, the Amish Outlaws, Danielle Porter and more.

In Selbyville, the Freeman Arts Pavilion is into the third week of its own seasonal, outdoor concert series — and the crowds are out in force. Nationally-known comedian Brian Regan will take the stage at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 15, and his performance will feature all reserved seating with chairs provided ($39, $64).

Country-rock favorite Darius Rucker will make his third appearance at Freeman on Friday, June 16; to the surprise of no one, those tickets sold out the first day they went on sale back in February.

Freeman will present the return of blues guitarist Keb’ Mo’ on Saturday, June 17, following a 7 p.m. set by Anthony D’Amat. This will be a general admission, “bring your own chair” event ($39). Tribute act The Brothers Doobie will play a show with that same seating situation at 7 p.m. Thursday, June 22 ($25, with children 12 and under admitted for free).

In Ocean City, the concert series at Seacrets will continue with the annual appearance of reggae-rock act Ballyhoo on Wednesday, June 21. The quartet will play outside on the beach stage following a set by special guest The Harbor Boys at 7 p.m. ($10, or free with ID).

Looking ahead a week, admission will be free for everyone when reggae singer-guitarist Joe Samba and guest Crooked Coast play at 9 p.m. Monday, June 26.

In Dewey Beach, the Bottle & Cork nightclub will present an evening of ’80s music courtesy of the colorfully-garbed cover band The Legwarmers at 9 p.m., Friday, June 16 ($20).

The 1,100-capacity Cork has issued a “low-ticket alert” for an appearance by Led Zeppelin tribute Get the Led Out at 8 p.m. Sunday, June 18. A mere 211 tickets remained as of Monday ($30). Badfish will pay homage to the reggae-rock sounds of Sublime on Wednesday, June 21, following an 8 p.m. set by Dale & the ZDubs ($20 in advance, $25 on the day of the show).

For those who prefer air conditioning, the Milton Theatre has a cool collection of indoor events on tap this weekend. Laugh in the Sun: A Summer Stand-Up Comedy Special is set for 8 p.m. Friday, June 16.

Comedians Frank Vignola, Derek Lee, Steve Bickel and host Keith Purnell will dish out the laughs ($14, $19). Tickets are moving briskly for a pair of Abba tributes that will take place Saturday, June 17. AbbaFab will perform at 3 p.m., and again at 8 p.m. ($50, $55).
