It's been yet another long "Droughtlander" for Outlander fans, but now that season 6 is officially coming in early 2022, it sounds like we all may need to brace ourselves.

In a new interview with Entertainment Weekly, Caitríona Balfe revealed that the new season of Starz's romantic time travel drama will throw the Frasers into another emotionally grueling situation, thanks to the arrival of new villains the Christies.

"Outlander does baddies and villains quite well," Balfe told the outlet. "[The Christies] aren't your typical villains, which is great and refreshing."

In fact, it sounds like at least one member of the Christie family will be distinctly un-villainous – that's Malva Christie (Jessica Reynolds), the daughter of Jamie's old nemesis, Tom Christie (Mark Lewis Jones).

"Claire and Malva build a great relationship and bond," Balfe explained. Presumably, her bond with Malva causes some friction with Jamie, whose bad blood with Tom goes back to their time at Ardsmuir prison. "It's very destabilizing for Claire. It's a really heartbreaking, but a really twisted narrative that they all get embroiled in."

Claire is already beginning the season on less-than-stable ground, after she was abducted and assaulted in the season 5 finale.

Season 6 of Outlander will launch on Starz in early 2022, with a shortened run of eight episodes. But the show has already been renewed for season 7, which will run for an extra-lengthy 16 episodes to make up for the abbreviated sixth.
