The Outlaws co-creator and star Stephen Merchant has teased what fans can expect from the show's second season.

Following the conclusion of the first run, which became the BBC's biggest comedy launch of the year, the series was confirmed this week to be getting a follow-up.

The show follows a group of strangers from different walks of life who serve a Community Payback sentence in Bristol and according to Merchant, the new season will be a "direct continuation" of events.

"It is the same bunch [of characters in season two]," he exclusively told Digital Spy. "We started filming last February and we got shut down ten days after we started because of COVID, and then I said to the BBC, 'Well, I'm just going to be twiddling my thumbs now, so can I write a second series, and then we'll film both back to back?'

"Which is what we ended up doing, which turns out is incredibly hard work to do during COVID, so I wouldn't suggest it to anybody.

"But yes, we kept the same characters because they were going to be around anyway," Merchant continued. "It's almost a direct continuation.

"But I feel like you could, in theory, have a whole new set of offenders in another series. You could set it anywhere else. It could be fun to have a show that never ends, with different sets of offenders, like Doctor Who."

The second season's synopsis reads: "Following on directly from the first series, the Outlaws still have time to serve on their sentences – but now they must face the fallout from their actions.

"If they thought the criminal underworld or the local police were done with them, they are sorely mistaken. The Outlaws must depend on one another while working with unlikely allies to atone for their sins – but can they save themselves without sacrificing their souls?"

Alongside Merchant, the second season will welcome back Christopher Walken, Rhianne Barreto, Gamba Cole, Darren Boyd, Clare Perkins, Eleanor Tomlinson, Jessica Gunning, Charles Babalola, Nina Wadia, Tom Hanson and Aiyana Goodfellow.

Julia Davis, Dolly Wells, Game of Thrones' Ian McElhinney and Dracula's Claes Bang will also be joining as guest stars.

The Outlaws is available to stream on BBC iPlayer in the UK and on Amazon Prime Video in the US.
