OCONOMOWOC - Olympia Fields, the city's "gateway" multi-use complex that will eventually feature a variety of commercial and residential spaces, will also serve U.S. veterans through a new outpatient medical facility.

Wangard Partners Inc., the Milwaukee-based full-service real estate company that's developing Olympia Fields, and the Clement J. Zablocki VA Health Care System have jointly announced plans for the Veterans Affairs clinic with an eye toward veterans living in the western suburbs, including Waukesha County.

The 8,500-square-foot clinic, at 1289 Olympia Fields Drive just off Highway 67, will offer a variety of services, including primary care, mental health and women’s health once it opens, possibly in late 2023. It marks the fifth community-based outpatient clinic within the Zablocki VA Health Care System, based in Milwaukee.

For the VA center and Wangard Partners, the facility represents an important strategic focus for their operations, according to representatives.

"We are thrilled to be expanding world-class care for our veterans into Oconomowoc and western Waukesha County," said Dr. Staci Williams, the Zablocki VA Health Care System’s acting director, in a news release. "We are always seeking ways to better connect and expand access to care for those who so honorably served our country."

Wangard, which according its company website has medical facilities built into its multiphase plans, stressed the value of a VA clinic for Oconomowoc.

"Wangard Partners strongly believes in the value that this development brings to the community of Oconomowoc, speaking not only of the services the VA provides, but as a catalyst for the future of Olympia Fields and Oconomowoc," said Stewart Wangard, the CEO and chairman of Wangard Partners, in the release. "We are honored to have played a part in bringing this project to fruition and look forward to seeing the positive impact it will have on our community."

The clinic also provides access to the amenities that are part of the development by Wangard, which purchased the former Olympia Resort hotel and conference center property in 2018 and expanded into other parcels, including the former Kmart, in 2021 and 2022.

According to Wangard, its plans also include retail establishments, The Locklyn Apartment Community, a hotel, medical offices, commercial outlets, and a recreational bike trail. Sendik's Food Market opened in October 2022 on the former Kmart site, and other parts of the development have been completed.

Oconomowoc itself invested $18.7 million in the development through tax-increment financing dollars, using property taxes generated by the improvements to pay for certain development costs — in this case, the installation of infrastructure in two phases.
