The Crimean Tatar community is very happy about the appointment of Rustem Umerov as Defense Minister, the leader of the Crimean Tatar people, Mustafa Dzhemilev, said in an interview with NV published on Feb. 26.

He also jokingly noted that the minister "owed" him something.

The famous dissident and politician admitted that he even "complained" about his former assistant, Umerov, to President Volodymyr Zelenskyy.

"I am already dissatisfied with him, and I told the President about it," Dzhemilev joked.

“When I turned 80 on Nov. 13 [2023] and the President presented me with the Hero of Ukraine award, he asked me how I liked Umerov's work as a Minister. And I said: he is an unfair Minister. On [Mejlis Chairman] Refat Chubarov's birthday, on Sept. 22, 2023, the Ukrainian Armed Forces hit the Black Sea Fleet headquarters building in Sevastopol. But he didn't give me any such gift, not even the bridge was struck.”

No Crimean Tatar has attained such a high government position as Umerov in 240 years, said the leader.

He proudly recalled that before agreeing to become the Defense Minister, Umerov asked President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to discuss this issue with Dzhemilev separately.

"I told him then: if you do something unworthy, it will affect our entire nation. I think he understood this," said Dzhemilev.

The head of the State Property Fund, Umerov, was appointed Minister of Defense of Ukraine on Sept. 6, 2023, replacing Oleksii Reznikov.
