Feb. 21—Less than 48 hours after jumping over Eastern Illinois to take over eighth-place in the Ohio Valley Conference standings, the Colonels slipped back down again.

EKU suffered an 81-62 loss at first-place UT-Martin on Saturday afternoon.

That loss, combined with an EIU victory over Austin Peay have the Colonels back in ninth place.

Only the top eight teams advance to the OVC Tournament next month in Evansville, Ind.

UT Martin (16-4, 14-2 OVC) used a big third quarter, outscoring the Colonels 22-14 to extend its lead to 12, 57-45, after three.

EKU (8-13, 7-10 OVC) went toe-to-toe with the first-place Skyhawks for the first half.

The Colonels again got off to a quick start and jumped out to an early 9-3 lead after a pair of three-pointers by Kendall Wingler. UTM answered back and tied the game at 14-14 after a pair of free throws by Dasia Young.

A driving layup by Emma Hacker with one second left in the first quarter made the score 22-20, after a quarter.

EKU took a 28-22 lead with 5:48 remaining in the first half after the Bria Bass layup, but the Skyhawks closed the half on a 13-3 run to take a 35-31 lead into the break and never trailed again.

Wingler and Anysa Jordan led the way for the Colonels with nine points. Bass had eight points and six rebounds.

Seygan Robbins led the way for the Skyhawks with a game-best 18 points. Maddie Waldrop had 12 points and 11 rebounds.

EKU shot 35 percent from the field. UT Martin shot 49 percent from the field on the contest.

The Colonels shot 19-of-22 from the free throw line.

EKU returns to McBrayer Arena on Monday after a five-game road tip. The Colonels will play host to Austin Peay.

Tip-off is scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
