Over 100 Motorists Stranded in Snow Near Rapid City, Officials Say

More than 100 motorists were stranded on the Interstate 90 near Rapid City, South Dakota, late on December 21, as snow and freezing wind chills hit the area, officials said.

The Pennington County Sheriff’s Office said more than 100 vehicles were stuck, mostly in the area from New Underwood to Wall, along the I-90, which was closed between Box Elder and Chamberlain due to low visibility and snow-packed surfaces.

“Resources from Pennington County Highway Department, South Dakota Department of Transportation and area volunteer fire departments are tied up rescuing people along this stretch of road. The goal is to get all stranded motorists to safety,” the sheriff’s office said.

The National Weather Service said widespread wind chills of -40F to near -60F were reported in the area and advised residents to stay indoors. Credit: Pennington County Sheriff’s Office via Storyful
