Stark-Watzinger gave the figures at a briefing with her Ukrainian counterpart in Kyiv, during her visit to Ukraine.

According to Stark-Watzinger, these children also have an opportunity to study in Ukrainian in Germany.

"Of course, we really don't want these children to loosen their ties with their homeland,” Stark-Watzinger said.

“So, we offer them parallel learning in Ukrainian. In big cities, local Ukrainian organisations run Sunday schools for them, and many children continue to study online in Ukrainian schools."

Most schools in Ukraine are currently closed due to Russia’s campaign targeting civilian infrastructure with missile and flying bomb attacks. Children study online, but classes are often disrupted by air raids and power outages.
