UPDATE: Power restored to 2,400 residents in NE Salem; Chemeketa cancels classes, Salem-Keizer releases students

Updated 4 p.m.

An outage left around 2,400 Portland General Electric customers in northeast Salem without power Thursday afternoon.

The outage included the Chemeketa Community College campus, prompting the college to cancel classes and close the main Salem campus until 4 p.m.

The traffic lights at several intersections along Lancaster Drive were reportedly out, leaving delays as drivers treated the intersections as four-way stops.

The outage occurred around 10 a.m. and power was restored to all but 100 or so customers in northeast Salem by 1:30 p.m, according to PGE's outage map. Officials estimated crews would restore power to the remaining customers in the area by 6:30 p.m.

PGE's outage map pointed to "equipment failure" as the cause of the outage, though no specific cause has been identified. But the outage came as 22 to 31 mph wind gusts were recorded in the Salem area.

Salem-Keizer Public Schools also posted on social media about school power outages in the area. Just before noon, the district posted on Twitter it was experiencing power outages at Hayesville Elementary and McKay High School.

"All students and staff are safe," officials wrote.

Hayesville Elementary began a process to release students for the day once they were able to connect with a parent or guardian.

Officials later announced McKay High School had an early controlled release starting at 1:14 p.m. due to the outage.

After-school activities were also canceled, Salem-Keizer School District officials said in a tweet.

More information will be added when available.
