Over 64,000 Cases of Del Monte Canned Corn Are Being Recalled

12/13/2018 — Along with ground beef and Jimmy Dean sausages, add canned corn to the list of items to check your pantry for. Del Monte Foods just announced a recall of over 64,000 cases of canned corn that weren't sterilized properly when canned. Since the cans were under-processed, they could be contaminated with spoilage organisms or pathogens that could potentially cause life-threatening illness if eaten, according to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration.

Luckily, you only need to check your kitchen cupboards for one product: Del Monte’s Fiesta Corn Seasoned with Red & Green Peppers. All of the cans of corn included in the recall are 15.25-oz. in size, and will have the UPC number 24000 02770 printed on the label. Also, they’ll have one of the following “best if used by” dates stamped on the bottom of the can:

  • August 14, 2021

  • August 15, 2021

  • August 16, 2021

  • September 3, 2021

  • September 4, 2021

  • September 5, 2021

  • September 6, 2021

  • September 22, 2021

  • September 23, 2021

The cans of corn included in the recall were distributed to a variety of retailers spread across 25 states: Alaska, Alabama, California, Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Louisiana, Maryland, Mississippi, Missouri, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, South Carolina, Texas, Vermont, Virginia, Washington, and Wisconsin. While the FDA hasn’t released a complete list of retailers yet, Walmart has already announced that some of the corn was sold at its stores.

If you have any of corn included in the recall in your kitchen, make sure you throw it out, or return it to the store. One of the main concerns with under-processed canned foods is that it's easier for bacteria to grow. In particular, Clostridium botulinum, the bacteria that produce the toxins that cause botulism is a concern. Thankfully, no illnesses have been reported yet, but it’s always better to stay on the safe side!
