Over a million return to Madrid's pride parade
STORY: Revellers and representatives of different political parties, rights groups and LGBTQI members set off from Madrid's Atocha station and travelled through the Spanish capital's main boulevards to Colon Square passing the iconic Cibeles Fountain on Saturday (July 9) evening.
The parade was cancelled in 2020 and a small version adhering to coronavirus restrictions took place in 2021.
Spain was the third country in the world to legalize same-sex marriage in 2005 and 89% of Spaniards say homosexuality should be accepted by society, a survey by the Pew Research Center found in 2020.
But many believe homophobia and transphobia have grown stronger in the traditionally conservative Catholic nation with the growing popularity of the far-right Vox party, which is aligned with populist movements elsewhere in Europe.
