Over one-quarter of Ukrainian territory remains under Russian occupation, though it’s army can no longer make significant advances, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said in an interview with Italian channel Rai 1.

"Two years later, it is important that we were able to defend our state, although about 26% of the country's territory remains under occupation,” Zelenskyy said. “We have seen that the Russian army cannot make significant advances. We stopped them.”

In the early days of Russia's full-scale invasion, people were very frightened, and there was a lot of chaos, he recalled. Things are different now, he said, as Ukrainians "have started to defend their land and families."

"Today, our country knows the toll of war all too well, as many families have tragically lost loved ones, many are wounded, and countless soldiers remain on the front lines,” Zelenskyy said.

“Yet we are not alone, as we have united world leaders in support of our cause.”

2,804 settlements in 144 territorial communities of Ukraine are still temporarily occupied as of September 2023, Ukraine’s Reintegration Ministry reported.
