Overdose investigation leads to trafficking arrest

Jun. 24—NEWTON — An overdose investigation netted 5.6 pounds of methamphetamine, 3 pounds of marijuana, one marijuana plant, 24.45 grams of marijuana wax, 36.19 grams of suspected roxicodone pills, nine long guns, one pistol and approximately $1,275 in cash.

On Thursday (June 23) deputies with the Catawba County Sheriff's Office responded to an overdose call on Hewitt Road in Catawba. Upon arrival, deputies noticed the presence of narcotics and altered the Catawba County Sheriff's Office Narcotics Division who initiated an investigation and obtained a search warrant for the premises. The drugs, long guns, pistol, and cash were seized during the search.

Kaleb Scott Smith, 20, and Ashley Marie Hardee, 39, were arrested and charged with trafficking methamphetamine, felony possession of marijuana, maintaining a dwelling for the purposes of manufacturing, selling or delivering controlled substances. Additional charges are pending.

Smith and Hardee each received secured bonds of $100,000 and were scheduled to appear in Catawba County District Court on Friday (June 24).
