Overnight fire at Fort Myers Beach gift shop burns through roof; no injuries reported

A fire overnight damaged the roof of a gift store at 161 Old San Carlos Blvd. on Fort Myers Beach.

A spokesman for Fort Myers Beach fire said units from that department as well as Iona McGregor Fire Department responded to a structure fire at Tropical Sunset, part of a commercial building made up of retail shops.

The Fort Myers Beach fire official said that when the first crew arrived it had flames and smoke showing from the front of the building but quickly brought the fire under control.

The fire, which happened shortly before 1:30 a.m., was contained to the façade of the popular beach T-shirt and gift shop.

A fire official said the point of origin for the fire was inside the boxy, structural area that makes up the façade and where electrical components such as transformers and drivers for strips of neon lights and other lighted signs are stored.

The Fort Myers Beach fire official said there were no indicators that the fire was intentional or maliciously set.
