Overnight Paterson police-involved shooting being investigated, prosecutor says

PATERSON — The Passaic County Prosecutor's Office is investigating an officer-involved shooting that took place near Garrison Street in the early hours of Saturday morning.

City police officers were in the process of arresting an individual for unlawful possession of a firearm at 3:20 a.m. when they heard gunshots nearby, stated a statement from the Prosecutor's Office. A city police officer who responded to the gunshots encountered an individual at the scene and eventually discharged his service weapon, striking the individual, who was transported to St. Joseph's University Medical Center for treatment.

The prosecutor's office did not disclose any further details about the incident. Neither the officer involved in the shooting nor the individual who was shot has been identified.

The Passaic County Prosecutor's Office has been designated as the independent prosecutor for this officer-involved shooting, officials said.

"The investigation in this matter, including the use of deadly force by police, remains

active and ongoing," the Prosecutor's Office said in a statement. "At this time, further information will not be released so as not to jeopardize the investigation in progress."
