KBIC to open warning center during emergency power outage planned for L’Anse area

L’Anse, Mich. (WJMN) – In a message from L’Anse Village Manager Robert A. La Fave on Thursday, he announced details of an emergency repair needed that will affect people in the community over the weekend.

According to the statement, The American Transmission Company (ATC) alerted L’Anse officials that they will need to repair one of their transmission lines.

The areas of L’Anse village, L’Anse Township, Aura, Skanee, Herman, and other areas will be without power on February 17 between 8 p.m. and 7 a.m. This will also include REA and UPPCO customers.

According to ATC, if the work is not completed immediately, a longer outage could be possible.

UPDATE:

The Keweenaw Bay Indian Community (KBIC) announced that it will open the Niiwin Akeaa Center as a warming shelter during the power outage. The center is located at 111 Beartown Road in Baraga.

KBIC provided the following information related to the warming center.

  • Location: Niiwin Akeaa Center, 111 Beartown Road, Baraga

  • Hours of Operation: The warming center will open on Saturday at 8:00 PM and will remain
    open until Sunday at 7:00 AM or until the power outage is resolved.

  • Services: While services will be limited, the Center will provide a warm environment for
    individuals seeking respite from the cold. Please note that this is not a shelter, and there will
    be no sleeping areas available. However, drinking water, coffee, and some snacks will be
    provided.
    General Information:

  • The warming center is open to the public.

  • All minors must be accompanied by a responsible adult.

  • Pets are not allowed on the premises.

  • Drugs and alcohol are strictly prohibited.
    The Keweenaw Bay Indian Community encourages community members to utilize this resource as needed during the power outage.
