Overturned tanker truck in Colonial Heights hinders southbound traffic flow on I-95

COLONIAL HEIGHTS — Southbound traffic on Interstate 95 was delayed or slow-moving for most of the day while authorities tended to an overturned tanker truck at the Southpark Boulevard exit.

Virginia State Police Sgt. Jessica Shehan said the crash happened around 5 a.m. According to Shehan, the driver of the tanker truck took the exit ramp too quickly and turned over in the grassy area just off the roadway. The driver, a 66-year-old man from Maryland's Eastern Shore, was taken to a local hospital with non-life threatening injuries.

Shehan did not say what was inside the tanker truck, but she alluded to its clean-up as the primary reason for the slowed traffic. Parts of West Roslyn Road at the overpass interchange were also closed to motorists.

The truck, a 2006 Kenworth T-2000, "is being treated with precautionary measures and must be completely emptied before it is uprighted," Shehan said.

There was no word on any charges.
