Owen Schexnaydre of Vandebilt baseball named Houma area male athlete of the year

Owen Schexnaydre closed out his senior season in historic fashion on May 15.

The Vandebilt senior pitcher helped his team win the Division II state championship with a 12-2 win over University Lab in Hammond. He was named the game’s most outstanding player, helping the Terriers capture their first LHSAA state baseball championship since 1971.

Schexnaydre, a LSU-Eunice signee, was picked as the Best of Bayou Preps male athlete of the year for his accomplishments.

The senior pitcher had a 11-3 record, allowed 46 hits, 28 runs, 14 earned runs and 24 walks. He finished with 115 strikeouts and 1.17 ERA. As a batter, he had 29 hits, 23 RBIs, 11 runs, .290 batting average. He hit 4-for-4 with three RBIs during a 12-2 win over University Lab in the Division II state championship game.

Schexnaydre said the Terriers were focused to bring the state championship title back to Vandebilt.

"We treated it as a business trip," Schexnaydre said. "We’ve been preparing for this moment for the last five years ... We've taken nothing for granted. We do whatever we can to win. We did it this year. The team chemistry is unmatched. You’re not going to find another team like this. Everything worked out the way we wanted it to."
