Owen Valley celebrates student-athletes at Fall sports awards ceremony

Owen Valley High School held its annual Fall sports awards ceremony recently, acknowledging the athletes from each sport and their season accomplishments.

Awards were given out by each coach, followed by the biggest award of the night, the Patriot Award. After reading off his many accomplishments over the season, OVHS Athletic Director Brad Greene announced senior football player Bryer LeCocq as the recipient of the Patriot Award.

LeCocq is a two-time all conference and two-time academic all-conference athlete and three-time football letter winner. This year, he set a new school record with 127 tackles in one season, good enough for ninth in the state. He finished the season first in the Western Indiana Conference in interceptions and first on the team in both punt return and kick return yards. He is a member of the National Honor Society, Bass Fishing Team, and a three-year letter winner on the baseball team. Bryer is ranked 13th in his class with an outstanding GPA of 4.013.

Teams, their athletes and the awards they presented are as follows:

Volleyball

Highlights of the volleyball season included winning the North Daviess tournament and senior Emma Bault breaking finishing her career with 1,284 digs.

Awards presented include Haley Frank (Mental Attitude and MVP), Reagan Martin (Offensive Player of the Year), Emma Bault (Defensive Player of the Year), Katelyn Shelley (Junior Varsity MVP), Emily Bray (JV Mental Attitude), and Olivia Daniels (JV Most Improved).

Team members include (Varsity) Emily Bray, Lucy Elkins, Emma Bault, Bre Davis, Haley Frank, Lily Wallace, Reagan Martin, Makala Gomes, Jaylan Kay, Taylor Monroe and Katelyn Shelley. Junior varsity members include Olivia Daniels, Lucy Dyer, Riley Gulley, Bailey Kay, Kennedy Shay, Kalyn Greene and Layla Hamm.

Girls' Cross Country

The Owen Valley girls' cross country team had a good season, winning or placing second at several meets and invitationals. The team also advanced to regional competition with two runners, Madi Kay and Lily Smith, moving on to the semi-state meet.

Awards presented included Lily Smith (MVP), Madison Kay (Most Improved), and Madyson Whicker (Mental Attitude).

Team members include Camie Forston, Madison Kay, Nova Mobley, Lily Smith, Taylor York, Rea Hinshaw, Olivia Mann and Madyson Whicker.

Boys' Cross Country

The Patriot boys' cross country team also had a successful year, dropping times throughout. Awards were presented to Lucas Hendershot (MVP), Tristan Calvin (Top Underclassman), and Paden Schwarz (Most Improved).

Team members include Lucas Hendershot, Aiden MIller, Tristan Calvin, Paden Schwarz, Mark Abell, Tucker McCarty and Kaden Shaw.

Girls' Soccer

The Owen Valley girls' soccer team had their best season on record, finishing with a record of 8-6, breaking the record for the most goals in a season, and advancing to the sectional championship game with a big semi-final win over Edgewood.

Awards were given to Olivia Wainscott (MVP), Hailey Beuerlein (Newcomer of the Year), Marina Knieriem (Versatility Award), Elizabeth Trader (Leadership Award), Josie Wesley (Leadership Award) Chloe Harris (Most Improved) and Klaudia Stahl (Most Improved).

Team members include Hailey Beuerlein, Marina Knieriem, Hailee Smith, Elizabeth Trader, Olivia Wainscott, Zoe Wainscott, Josie Wesley, Ashlyn Boltinghouse, Becca Brown, Chloe Harris, Kiera Kelley, Anna Martin, Aly Roddy, Klaudia Stahl, Beau Woodruff, Abigail Yeager, Ines Hidalgo Munoz, Catie Harris, and Addison Koontz.

Boys' Soccer

The Owen Valley boys' soccer team made strides throughout the season, playing competitively in several games with high caliber team.

Awards presented include Nathan Goss (MVP), Eli Wood (Top Scorer), Connor Heaslet Wardlaw (Most Improved), Cobe Bault (Mental Attitude) and Kale Paquette (Mental Attitude).

Team members include TJ Baker, Noah Dean, Ethan Fulk, Nathan Goss, Dylan Herbert, Jaden Padgett, Dylan Streit, Eli Wood, Keegan York, Tate Conley, Connor Heaslet Wardlaw, Silas Van Arsdale, Eli Weaver, Jon Wetzel, Robert Wheeler, Austin Manuel, Cobe Bault, Calvin Dean, Gavin Kennedy, Charles Kim, Sawyer LaGrange, Rhett Manuel, Kale Paquette, Rylan Robinson, Warren Stultz and Maddex Weaver.

Girls' Golf

The Owen Valley girls' golf team was under the direction of first year varsity coach Jason James this season and had an outstanding season to show for it, including finishing with two all conference athletes.

Awards were presented to Jenna Harris (MVP), Norah Beeman (Mental Attitude), and Lola James (Most Improved).

Team members include Norah Beeman, Jenna Harris, Maria Hartman, Trinity Calvin, Lola James, Olivia Stogsdill and Lillian James.

Boys' Tennis

With a record of 10-6, the OV boys' tennis team finished strong, advancing to the sectional semi-final with a 5-0 win over South Vermillion. The Patriots finished third in the WIC with a record of 6-2 in conference play.

Awards were presented to Zack Hamilton (MVP), Kolton Jackson (Most Wins), Carlos Trevino (Most Doubles Wins), and Rhet Heckman (Newcomer Award).

Football

The Patriot football team had a season for the ages, finishing 11-2 overall and tied for first in the WIC. The Patriot won a sectional title, their first since 1992. According to first-year head coach Rob Gibson, Owen Valley football broke nine records during this historic season. Gibson was also named Coach of the Year in the WIC.

Award winners were Christian McDonald (MVP & Outstanding Offensive Back), Logan McGraw (Outstanding Offensive Lineman), Bryer LeCocq (Patriot Award, Leadership Award and Outstanding Defensive Back), and Jerry McBee (Outstanding defensive lineman).

Junior Varsity team members include Kolton Meinert, Payton Barger, Dominic Perry, Eli Collier, Bryan Richardson, Elijah Anderson, Quentin Chapman, Camden Glenn, Dakota Heidrick, Gage James, Lucas McBee, Brayden McDonald, Drew McKinney, Kacey Orman, Kolby Pardue, Devin Risk, Landon Summerlot and Timothy Wheeler. Managers include: Rhilee Leonard, Hannah Pendleton, Lexi Pinkard and Rylee York.
