The Real-Life Schitt’s Creek Motel Is Listed for $1.6 Million

Fans of Schitt’s Creek, rejoice! The real-life motel where the Emmy Award–winning Canadian series was filmed is officially on the market, reports People. Jesse Tipping, the longtime owner of the property, told the Simcoe County News in September that he planned to list the Orangeville, Ontario, motel—better known to Schitt’s fans as the Rosebud Motel. The asking price for the building, originally built as a “party spot” in the 1960s, is $1.6 million US.

Though much of the series took place in two motel rooms—one occupied by Moira and Johnny Rose, the other by their kids David and Alexis—and the lobby, the entirety of the motel actually comprises eight apartment-style rooms and a three-bedroom unit. Prior to Schitt’s Creek, it served as the backdrop for several other films and miniseries, including 2005’s A History of Violence, the 2016 Hulu series 11.22.63, and The Umbrella Academy.

Tipping recalled how his motel was first linked to father-son duo Eugene and Dan Levy's show. “I just got a call out of nowhere from a location scout named Jeff,” he said to the Simcoe County News. He was told that the crew would be shooting a pilot for an upcoming series called Schitt’s Creek; Tipping has subsequently rented his motel out to the cast and crew for a month each year for the last six years. Fans of the show, which aired its final episode in April, often show up to the motel from as far away as Australia just to snap photos or inquire about the series, which Tipping finds amusing. “We just kind of let them enjoy it because if they are not bothering anybody, people really get a kick out of it,” he said. Tipping originally purchased the property in 2011 to house basketball recruits (he is president of the Athlete Institute Basketball Academy and Orangeville Prep), and has been quietly renting out rooms for the past two years on Airbnb. Most recently, he’s opened it up to help a local organization in need of space for folks to quarantine during the pandemic.
