AMY JOHNSON: New hospital in LA County is looking to hire more than 100 nurses. It's a move they say is desperately needed during the pandemic. KCAL 9's Tina Patel is live in Hawaiian Gardens with a closer look. Good morning, Tina.

TINA PATEL: Good morning, Amy. The Pacific Gardens Medical Center behind me just reopened after a facility that was here earlier closed about four years ago. So they are having a job fair later on today to hopefully get completely staffed. We're going to talk about that in a minute, but first I want to talk about just how necessary it is to have medical facilities right now. Because even though the numbers of COVID have gone down in our community, it is still a very big concern.

Take a look at the latest figures released from the County of Los Angeles just yesterday. 756 new cases were reported, including 60 new deaths. And right now across the county, there are 861 people in the hospital, nearly a third of those in the ICU.

So as we take a look at video that shows what hospitals have been dealing with over the past year, it's not only about having enough hospital beds for people that might have COVID, it's also about having enough staff to treat those patients.

In Hawaiian Gardens, as we said, there was a medical facility that was here about four years ago, but it closed. Over the last few months, staff have been working to get it refurbished and reopened with authority from the state to help during this pandemic. So this hospital will have 137 beds, a full ER, a full ICU, and a unit that will be used to specially treat those patients that have COVID. But they do want to make sure that they get more staff.

So as we come back out here live, from 10:00 to 2:00 today, they are going to be having a job fair here at the hospital. They are specifically looking for skilled and non-skilled nurses, but they say there are also other positions in non-clinical roles. People that can help out with food services and janitorial services. So if you are looking for a job, and if you're looking to maybe help out during this pandemic, they could certainly use you here in Hawaiian Gardens. As we said, the job fair will be from 10:00 to 2:00 PM. Amy, we'll send it back to you.

AMY JOHNSON: All right.
