Pacifica restaurant hurt by pier closure

PACIFICA, Calif. (KRON) — A café in Pacifica said business is down since the pier shut down. It was damaged by major waves just before the new year and is still being repaired.

It was supposed to reopen on Jan. 26, but that’s now been pushed back to Valentine’s Day, which owners of the Chit Chat Café said will be the greatest gift.

The owners of Chit Chat Café said they’re seeing a few people trickle in lately. They’re the only business sitting on the pier that has been closed since huge damaged the west facing deck and concrete railing in late December–just one month after the couple bought chit chat.

Ginger Davis said she and her husband understood the threat of the ocean but didn’t expect to deal with it so soon into their ownership and for this long.

“It’s a really cool natural phenomenon but it terms of business it’s gotten us down to about 50 percent and I’ve been talking to a lot of the other business owners in the area and it’s the same for them,” Davis said. “Because once the streets closed and the pier closes, we don’t get the tourism crowd we don’t get the fishermen so, it’s hard.”

The pier was set to close for three weeks for a structural assessment and was supposed to open Jan. 26 but that’s been delayed.

So, crab season is on hold here as fishermen have to wait. The fridge at chit chat café is still full of unsold bait. The clean up along the street is looking pretty good as potholes have been mostly filled and roads are back up.
