Now that Punxsutawney Phil has decreed that the end of winter is near, attention turns to how to spend spring break this year.

Fun fact: the rites of revelry that are spring break can be traced back to ancient Greece and the early spring festival of Anthesteria.

Dedicated to Dionysus, the pastoral god of wine, women and ritual madness, Anthesteria was three days of letting loose, getting down, drowning sorrow and celebrating fertility.

Considered a sacred “awakening,” it’s easy to draw the line betwixt honoring the god of wine and downing shots to the sweet sounds of EDM in a trash bar in Fort Lauderdale.

Whether traveling solo, with a partner, a gaggle of kids or bound for undergrad debauchery, March remains the merry month of the year when people take to the high road, the (sometimes) friendly skies and the clogged highways with escape on their minds.

Tokyo, Japan

Gemini is the sign of mutable duality, and there is perhaps no city more dichotomous than Tokyo, a metropolis that lives between nature and architecture, shrines and skyscrapers, tradition and innovation, the old world and the chrome breath of modernity. Gemini feeds on the new, the novel and the curious — and Tokyo is a city of endless streets and ceaseless wonders.

CANCER (June 21 – July 22)

Ensenada, Mexico

As cardinal water, Cancer folks like the comforts of home, the feel of the coast and the humbling splendor of nature. Ensenada, Mexico, with its proximity to the U.S. and opportunities for whale-watching, is a moon-baby dream come true. Bonus: Ensenada is home to Mexico’s celebrated wine country, so even if you can’t catch sight of a whale you’ll be able to catch a buzz (ideal for the heavy feels of the crab contingent or the parent of a moody Cancer child).

Leo is the sign of the sun-drenched sovereign, and Puerto Rico is a self-governing island commonwealth. Leo loves a scene worth documenting — and the capital city of San Juan, home to golden beaches, storied architecture, wild nightlife and vibrant street art more than delivers.

Fitting an earth sign symbolized by a maiden deity, Virgo leans toward the pristine and open air. More at home in the wild than in the maddening crowd, this ilk will have a big time in Big Sky. SCORPIO (October 23 – November 21)

Death Valley, California

Solitary and prone to extremes, Scorpio is well-suited for the vast expanses of Death Valley National Park. Offering open roads, unearthly landscapes and minimal crowds, the area is also ideal for star-gazing and is home to the hauntingly beautiful Goldwell Open Air Museum. As the sign synonymous with sex, death and transformation, Scorpios might like to stay across state lines at The Shady Lady, a former brothel turned charming bed and breakfast.

SAGITTARIUS (November 22 – December 21)

Texas Hill Country

With hooves on the ground and arrows to the sky, Sagittarius was essentially born to cosplay cowboy, and in Texas Hill Country opportunity abounds for spur-wearing, saloon sipping, two-stepping, pony-riding, hot-springing and road-tripping. In springtime the bluebonnets bloom, covering the countryside in the floral equivalent of a breath of fresh air.

Talkeetna, Alaska

As the sign who isn’t satisfied without a struggle, Capricorn folks are primed to take to colder climes in search of surreal sights. With an eye on the bottom line, sea goats will appreciate that spring break is technically shoulder season for those wanting to experience the Northern Lights in all their incandescent glory. Talkeetna, Alaska, with proximity to Denali and ample opportunity to see the lights, is an excellent jumping-off point.

AQUARIUS (January 20 – February 18)

Salar de Uyuni, Bolivia

Ever the aliens, Aquarius folks like the far out, the avant-grade and the extraterrestrial. In-kind and salinity, the Uyuni salt flats in Bolivia offer one of the most striking views on this or any other planet. During the rainy season (December to April), a thin layer of water transforms the flats into a sky mirror (progressive rock band name). Water bearers rule the realms of progress and engineering; apropos of this, the terrain also serves as an extraction site for lithium — the sacred lube of technology.

PISCES (February 19 – March 20)

South Padre Island, Texas

Pisceans prefer to get lost in the mix, whether that mix is a frozen drink, a raucous dive bar, the back of an El Camino or the deep blue sea. By and large, these people are easy to please and refreshingly devoid of pretense, making the kitch and abandon of South Padre Island an ideal spring break destination. On this pastel isle of dreams, fish folk can go dolphin-watching or day-drinking — or day drink while dolphin-watching.
