Packed Crowds Celebrate New Year's Eve in Former Coronavirus Epicentre Wuhan, China

Wuhan residents gathered for the countdown to 2021 on New Year’s Eve on December 31, 2020.

Wang Liangyuan filmed a video that showed countdown being projected on the facade of Duomo Church. The crowd cheering “Happy new year” to each other and releasing the balloons after the countdown finished.

Wang told Storyful that the countdown event has been held annually. He said the video showed the resilience of Wuhan residents following the coronavirus outbreak and lockdown the city suffered through in 2020. At the end of the lockdown from mid-January to early April, Chinese health authorities reported there had been 68,000 confirmed cases of COVID-19 in Hubei province out of China’s approximately 82,000 cases.
